THE CHALLENGE

Microsoft Windows was undergoing a major interface redesign, requiring a visual overhaul of 100+ app icons aligned with the emerging Fluent Design family.

MY ROLE

As part of the Microsoft Windows Fonts & Icons Team, I designed new system app icons while maintaining consistency across the Fluent Design System.

​

DESIGN APPROACH

I focused on four principles: understand Fluent Design, prioritize accessibility, innovate without sacrificing familiarity, and design for immediate recognition. An initial, controlled blue palette kept concepts visually consistent and ensured hues remained distinguishable in grayscale.

EXECUTION

Icons were built on a 48x pixel grid with guides governing proportions, corner radii, spacing, and alignment. Concepts were evaluated through iterative reviews, with particular attention to first-glance comprehension and areas of ambiguity.
