HALO INFINITE
SANDBOX ICON SYSTEM

THE CHALLENGE

Halo Infinite's updated 3D sandbox introduced changes to the geometry and silhouettes of familiar weapons and equipment. The HUD iconography needed to reflect those updates while preserving Halo's recognizable visual language.

MY ROLE

I owned the creation and implementation of the updated sandbox HUD icons, including the visual system, individual icons, gradient-backed variants, and their integration into the game's UI systems.

DESIGN APPROACH

Icons were based on orthographic captures of the 3D models with shaders and coatings hidden. A two-level outline system used heavier contours to establish the overall silhouette and lighter contours to highlight distinctive internal features.

Specific outline values and pixel-grid construction helped maintain consistency and clarity at HUD scale. Gradient-backed variants added depth and provided a secondary treatment for weapons.

EXECUTION

I created a reusable Photoshop setup using Smart Objects and alpha masks for consistent TIF exports. Photoshop Actions automated repetitive production steps and significantly reduced manual work.

The final assets were implemented as bitmap, tag, and data files, then connected to their corresponding sandbox models and downstream systems, including weapon-spawner FX and UI pickup interactions.

THE RESULT

The final icon system established a cohesive and scalable visual language for Halo Infinite's sandbox HUD, preserving recognizable silhouettes while improving clarity and consistency at small sizes.
